We took a typical booking — one bed in a shared room at «Myagko i Tochka», Tula, Karla Marksa St. 171, 7 weekday nights, payment on arrival. Every channel was checked against the same 6 criteria.

Bottom line: the minimum weekly overpayment is 200 ₽ (Avito), the maximum — 490 ₽ (Booking). Over 30 nights the direct-booking saving reaches 2 100 ₽ compared to Booking. And the aggregator gives you nothing in return except a convenient button — the address, passport details, keys and any cleaning complaints are all handled with the hostel administrator directly anyway.

Why Aggregators Are More Expensive: How the Commissions Work

Behind the «Book» button on every platform sits a contract with the hotel for 10–20 % of every booking. Booking has historically charged 15 %, but for popular objects in high season the commission rises to 18 % through the Preferred Partner program. Ostrovok averages 12 %, climbing to 15 % with cashback-promotion enrolment. Yandex Travel takes 10–15 % depending on the tier. The hotel does not «give a discount» from this: the commission is built into the base price, so the room on the platform sells for more than at the front desk. Avito Rental works differently — the ≈ 7 % service fee is charged to the tenant as a separate line. A separate line item that aggregators hide is currency conversion for foreign cards. Booking issues the invoice in euros or dollars, and your Russian card converts the amount twice: RUB → EUR → RUB. Most importantly, aggregators sell not a bed, but the probability of a bed. Booking's terms include «equivalent lodging», Ostrovok's — «relocation on rebooking», Avito's — the seller's right to withdraw the listing before check-in. The platform guarantees to refund your money, but not that you will actually sleep in the bed you booked.
