May 9: Victory Day — Parade, Immortal Regiment, Fireworks

May 9 in Tula features a military parade at Lenin Square, the Immortal Regiment march, concerts, and festive fireworks in the evening. The hostel is a 10-15 minute walk from the square. The Tula Defenders Memorial and the city defense museum are right in the center. Tula is a Hero City, and Victory Day is celebrated here with special grandeur.

What matters on the May holidays: heat, crowds, closures, parking

Heat. 9 May is often the first genuinely hot day of spring, and at the parade and march you will be on your feet in open sun for an hour and a half to two hours. A hat, a bottle of water and sunscreen are essential — all available at the Rigla pharmacy near the hostel.

Crowds. Lenin Square fills up densely on parade day. With children or a pushchair, keep to the edge of the square rather than the middle, and agree on a meeting point with your group in advance in case you get separated: mobile networks are overloaded in the crowd and may lag.

Closures. The city centre is closed off from the morning and stays closed until the evening fireworks end. You cannot drive up to the square, so on 9 May getting around downtown is on foot only. From our courtyard to Lenin Square and the embankment is a 10–15 minute walk.

Parking. If you drive from Moscow, arrive on the evening of 8 May: by the 9th the centre is already closed. Parking in the hostel courtyard is free and open around the clock, and from there you walk to the parade. More on the with parking and from Moscow pages.

5 rules for a May guest in Tula

Arrive on 8 May, not on the morning of the 9th. On 9 May the centre is already closed and you cannot drive up to the square or the hostel — check in the day before and get a good sleep.
Take your spot at the parade by 9:30. Later, Lenin Square fills with a dense crowd and a clear view near the stands is gone.
Buy picnic food and barbecue supplies in advance — on 30 April or 1 May. On holidays the shops near the centre keep shorter hours and the queues are longer.
Dress in layers. For the daytime parade — a hat, water and sunscreen; for the evening fireworks bring a warm layer, as the centre gets chilly after sunset.
Agree on a meeting point in advance. For example, by the hostel entrance at 171 Karl Marx Street — if you lose each other in the crowd and calls won't go through, everyone knows where to return.

Magnit and Rigla nearby: what to grab for the May programme

Everything for the May programme is a couple of steps from the hostel. At Magnit (about a 3-minute walk) it is easy to stock up for your first picnic on 1–2 May: meat for the barbecue, vegetables, water, ice, disposable tableware — you can marinate the meat the night before in our kitchen. Meals are not included in the room rate: there is a kitchen, but you buy and cook the food yourself — which works out noticeably cheaper than cafes during the holidays. Before 9 May people also pick up a St. George ribbon here and a supply of water for the hot parade day.

At the Rigla pharmacy (about a 5-minute walk) it is worth getting sunscreen and something for a headache in case of long standing in the sun, plus wet wipes and plasters if you plan to be on your feet all day — from the morning parade to the evening fireworks.

The parade is best seen from Lenin Square — arrive by 9:30 to stand near the stands. The evening fireworks look finest from Kazanskaya Embankment, the Kremlin garden and the bridge over the Upa. From the hostel to the square and the embankment is a 10–15 minute walk.

From the morning of 9 May, Prospekt Lenina, Lenin Square and its approaches are closed, and in the evening the centre stays closed until the fireworks end. You cannot drive up to the square — leave the car in the hostel's free courtyard parking and walk 10–15 minutes.

Belousov Central Park and the green areas of central Tula are good for a walk and a picnic. It is convenient to buy meat and groceries in advance at the Magnit near the hostel and marinate them in our kitchen. Note: barbecues in parks are allowed only in designated spots — check at the entrance.

The Immortal Regiment column forms in the centre by Lenin Square after the parade, roughly around midday, and moves along Prospekt Lenina. Print a photo of your veteran relative on an A4 placard in advance. The exact time and gathering point are published shortly before the holiday — check a day or two ahead.
